Letters to my Mum

I’m so sorry

To my darling Mum,

It has been so long since I have written and SO much has happened.

I’ve kept going though Mum so I’ll update you on everything now.

We had our annual Birmingham weekend whilst Mike was at Butlins and it was lovely to go as always just a shame Beth was feeling so unwell and Si had a work bbq.

We took the girls to Hatton Farm where all 3 of mine got the courage to drop from the highest red slide! Well, once they had done it once there was no stopping them.

We fed the animals as always

Then took them all out to the rides and the play area

Beth and Si got the girls’ birthday presents which we took them to Disney store to choose. Abigail got lots of princess stuff, and Madison got…….

Whilst we were there, Vix who had worked hard ran the Race for Life in Folkestone

Now we’re on to the 14th June. The day I got to after school club to find Madison completely beside herself. She had been running back to the small playground with Abigail when Abigail ‘accidentally’ pushed her. She had cut both of her knees, both arms and her hand.

I got her home and wrapped her in a blanket as she was shaking which made me wonder especially when Madison kept complaining that her wrist hurt.

When Mike came in her had a look and she could move it from side to side and round in a circle so we thought maybe she had just bruised it.

The next morning she went to the toilet and started shouting out for me as she couldn’t break off any toilet roll. Yep, Mike was straight up to A&E (Dad came over and took the other 2 to school for us), and yep, Madison had fractured her wrist. The part that made her cry was when they said she couldn’t go to school because the cast needed to harden!!

Madison got to go TV shopping with Daddy and even though I put her in charge this is what we got…

Mike has put it on the wall and all the wires are now hidden so it looks good. It’s just SO big Mum, you would hate it πŸ˜„.

At the same time as all this we had decided to re-decorate the living room which we cleared and prepped and Dad kindly came and decorated it for us.

Then came Father’s Day. We had a lovely day but my favourite part was the cooked breakfast in the morning and then dancing in the kitchen.

Alongside all of this it has been the 150tb anniversary of the school this year so I had been working with the PFA to get things organised for the school fete and the school had a Victorian day. Our girls looked great

We had the new carpets fitted, they are amazing Mum

And things started to go really downhill with Grandma. I got a call to say that she had been removed from bingo as she was spitting in people’s faces and had threatened to throw a chair at another lady.

I went to see her in the evening and she was ok just very confused and had even forgotten about it by the time I got there.

That weekend, 25th June it was time to set up for the school fete with Dad and Beth, Vics and I were doing the pyjama walk in the evening.

It of course poured with rain to the point I had to move my car

And I had Grandma on the phone saying she didn’t know where she was and that they were only going to let her stay where she was for 1 more night etc. Of course she in the Home but very confused.

Beth and I popped to see her before the pyjama walk and found out that she had a urinary infection (I feel like it should’ve thought of that on the wed!) and that they were arranging the anti biotics for her.

We went on for dinner at the outlet which was 4 of us and Dad. I think it’s for first time we’ve done that just us since you’ve been gone and then on to the walk.

We did giggle and it was lovely spending some time with my sisters.

School Fete day went really well, we raised over Β£5,000 for the school which is just fantastic and everybody came along.

I finished clearing up from the fete to find a missed call from Heathfield. Grandma had fallen twice Saturday night but been fine but had had quite a nasty fall Sunday afternoon.

I went to see her and she seemed OK, a nasty cut on her arm and still very confused but ok.

Then 4am on the Monday I get a call from Heathfield to say that Grandma had fallen and they think she had broken her hip.

Yes this was the case. Tbey we’re going to have to operate which meant they had to have the DNR conversation with me. It was so hard Mum. I felt like it should be you there not me making that decision as Granddaughter. I did say to not resuscitate but made clear it was as next of kin and now power of attorney and they weren’t sure how she would be but carried on. They got her down for surgery at 10am and she was back out at 2pm so I went back up to the hospital.

This is how my Grandma looked bless her..

With Grandma in hospital recovering it was on to my girls’ birthdays which was now only 2 days away. They were so excited Mum. We got them new bikes each, without stabilisers…

They have grown up so much Mum and I know you would be so proud of the 3 beautiful girls that are my children.

On the meantime daily visits to Grandma was showing her recovering.

Next was the 1st July where Madison was having the cast taken off (she hoped), this wasn’t the case. She had to have a blue cast for 2 weeks. She got upset at first but when she realised that it was lighter and waterproof and she would be able to go outside she was much happier.

Wow, we’ve made it to July Mum.

This was the weekend of the colour run for us Vaughans and we had so much fun. You run/walk 5k and they through colour dye at you on the way round. It was lovely to do something different just the 5 of us.

8th July was sports day. I know how much you loved coming to sports day so even though I miss you all the time some days hurt far more than others.

Our girls did really well as always and we were very lucky with the weather.

This was also the day I got a call to say Grandma was going back to Heathfield the next day. What a relief I thought Mum as I had been going to see her every day.

9th July was the day of the race for life for me and Chloe. She ran 5k in 33 minutes, just amazing.

Then Chloe had a pool party for her friend’s birthday.

I had a call from Heathfield to confirm Grandma was back and to discuss how she was and what medication she was now on as she had had heart trouble post the operation.

The 10th July was the girls’ birthday parties so basically a day in Imagine for us but they had a great time.

Since then I have been working on a presentation that I did to the MD last Monday but it was SO much work and dealing/coping with Grandma.

She had lost so much weight in the hospital Mum that they were hoping to feed her up when she got back but she still wouldn’t really eat or drink.

She was still saying about having a very dry mouth and it feeling like she had something stuck in her throat. She had also lost all concept of the day and time which I hoped was just being in hospital but it didn’t seem to be getting better and her right leg just seemed to be swelling more and more.

They called out the doctors who found she has thrush all over the place but mainly in her mouth and throat, another urinary infection and that she should have water tablets for the swelling.

Grandma has not responded to any of the medication and continues to not eat but we are now at a point where for my visit last Sunday she spent most of it asleep. Grandma never did that, she would be up and down and moaning about everything.

It’s really hard to see her like this and she is just covered in plasters where her cuts just aren’t healing. However hard the thought of her not being here I don’t want this to be her existence either Mum.

Please help.

So as you can see with work on top, this has been a crazy busy, hectic, a little bit stressful few weeks alongside my heart hurting so much as I miss you being here and being here to help with Grandma more and more.

I’m not sure what I’ll do when she joins you as well.

I miss and love you with all my heart Mum.

Love

Me xxx
